On December 18, 2010 the Graduation Ceremony in the festive Tuscany Hall of the Princebishop’s Residence of Würzburg brought the two exciting years of MBA studies to an end for the 25 graduates of the QIAGEN Class of 2010. To the sound of the guitar duo “TocaMadera!” formed by Carlo Hilsdorf and André Herteux the students entered the Tuscany Hall dressed up in gowns to complete the MBA studies after two years of hard work, but also a lot of fun, which this group really knew how to combine.
Festive speech by John Gilardi „Perspectives on Managing vs. Leadership“A festive speech was held by John Gilardi, Vice President Corporate Communications at QIAGEN, on the topic „Perspectives on Managing vs. Leadership“. In it he appealed to the graduates in their function as employees of QIAGEN as they are representing and forming the reputation and the image of QIAGEN both internal and external from day to day during their contact with customers, competitors and coworkers. While “managing” means doing things right according to Gilardi, “leading” strives for doing the right things. While leadership knows what is possible, while management makes it possible to calculate the possibilities. Leading personalities recognize possibilities and opportunities that derive from the strengths of the team and that allow a company to grow. Managers focus on catastrophes and risk and aim at improvement and efficiency. Gilardi wants the alumni to come back to the company with the knowledge they gained during the last two years and to be leaders and managers at the same time to push the company further into the direction of success. |
Focus on „Leadership by Information“ by Professor Dr. Rainer ThomeAfterwards, Professor Dr. Rainer Thome, Academic Director of the Executive MBA Business Integration, was continuing the topic with his speech about „Leadership by Information“. He stated that it is not possible to lead without information. However usually the Finance Department is in charge of the IT and tries to cut its expenses as it only sees IT as a cost driver. But this is supposed to be the wrong direction. Information is more of a cost reducer. An investment in information systems therefore offers new possibilities and pushes the company forwards. Automations help to save money in other areas. According to Professor Thome a new Kondratiev wave is about to come. He calls on the graduates to recognize this development and to form and organize this process within their company to make it possible for QIAGEN to benefit from this development.QIAGEN Class of 2010: Two years of hard work and a lot of funManaging Director of the Executive MBA Business Integration, Dr. Michael Dörflein, resumed the past two years. He claimed that our QIAGEN Class of 2010 has been a nice and friendly class which was combining different cultural backgrounds, characters, and opinions. The study trip to Beijing will always be remembered as a highlight. The speech of the students Aruna Subramanian and David Salmon recalled the most memorable moments of the past two study years. This study group knew how to combine hard work with a lot of fun. |
